As it is still quite cold I thought a hat would be a nice quick project. I saw a photo of a hat I liked on some Danish site and conjured up a pattern to emulate it. I think I did quite well, ha! I knitted the hat in just a few hours with some circulars I happened to have. The crown is crocheted.
The wool is from a frogged scarf I've had for some years, so I don't know what brand it is

And I ordered some great sock yarn via e-bay. And... my mother, who is 86, took up knitting socks again. I lured her into this by showing her this yarn and, as I hoped, she couldn't resist. She chose the blue/green, the third from the top.
The blue/green yarn at the top I will use to knit a scarf. I ordered two of the balls.

This is the first of series of three hangings. They are part of an exhibition of lamps in a small museum here in Leiden. At the exhibition I put lamps behind them. And there is also a little fairy tale which I made up and printed out. I stuck up the story so that visitors know what the series of lamps represent.

And it fits like a dream, to my amazement! Now up to the second sock. And as you see on the photo there's another ball ready for the next pair.
On the internet I found a Dutch yarn store called M+M Wolpost, which sells gorgeous sock yarn very cheap. Again this is self-patterning, in all kinds of lovely colour combinations, with names like Parrot and Chameleon. And they've got lots of other great yarn too. I might choose some to make a cardigan.

At the moment I'm working on three wallhangings made from cotton fabric with wool felted onto them. I'm also adding machine embroidery. They will be part of an exhibiton in which I take part with seven other felting ladies from my felting course. The theme is 'lamps', so I will put tiny lamps behind them.
They're alomst finished. I only have to add some beads and stuff. So if all goes well that'll be another project finished (hopefully this afternoon).

I joined a group on Flickr in order to follow the creativity course presented in the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.
Doing this course entails writing three so-called Morning Pages every day. I'm not particularly fond of doing this, especially not in the morning, ha!
Each week you also have to take yourself on an Artist Date. This I like very much. In week 1 I went to the local Museum of Ethnology to see an exhibition about Australia I had wanted to see for a long time. I liked it immensely! In the museum shop I also bought a very nice book about textile crafts inspired by African methods of printing, braiding, embroidery etc. It was a real bargain.

This is the Christmas ornament I made for Susan, and which has fortunately arrived. It took very long, although I sent it by Air Mail.
I hand felted the material and added Angelina fibre, machine embroidery and some beads.

This is the start of my first sock ever! I started it on 16 Dec. The start was troublesome: fighting with four needles at the same time! But now the knitting has become easy. Who would have thought that!
Last night my mother helped me with the heel part, which wasn't as difficult as I expected. I'll post pictures of the progress later.
My mother is 86 and knitted tons of socks in her life. Now she's learning me how to do it, so I will be able to knit socks for my BF.

This is my first knitted version of the curly whirly scarf. It is knitted with two 50 g. balls of Katia Ingenua (mohair). I did a double version, i.e. I first knitted one half and then took up the CO stitches again and knitted the other half.
It's so soft and warm! I love it!

Yesterday I thought it would be a good moment to start on the felted lamp I still need to make for the exposition in January 2006, so I took out all my felting things. But when I began I suddenly found myself making a beret. Or so I thought. Because when the 'thing' came out of the washing machine (I first felted it by hand for some time and then gave it a final spin in the washing machine to make it felt some more) I knew it was supposed to be a bowl. I liked the bobbly structure too much. For a beret I would have had to stretch it and the bobbles would be lost.
In this picture you see how it first looked, like a brain with a plastic bag stucking out of it. Instant love, for some reason...

Saturday I went to Scrap in Delfshaven. They sell leftovers from various factories. They had an enormous lot of leather scraps and I picked out all the pieces that were screenprinted with lovely motifs. They have gorgeous variegated colours. Only 50 eurocent for a bag! They are leftovers from the famous designer People of the Labyrinths, which I adore but can't afford.

I crocheted this bag with really bulky wool. I embellished it with strips of an old scarf, eyelash yarn and wool roving. I put it in the washing machine three times. I was so stupid to forget to take a picture prior to felting; it was huge!
The double crochet felted alright, but the bottom I did in single crochet, which felted much less. The strap I made really long, and this fortunately shrunk to just the right lenght.

There's something I must write about. No pictures this time, because I'm too ashamed to show what I suffer from: Startitis! I keep starting knitties and must have about five UFO's by now. Plus plans to start fifteen more.
I have been wondering why I do this, but I have no idea at all. BUT... I googled the term Startitis and guess what? There are loads of kntting women around who suffer from the same thing. So I'm definitely not alone in this! Now I still have to read all those blogs to find out if someone has found the origin of this aberration. But first I am going to start another scarf (or ten)...

Today was my lucky day! Not only did I finally find a lovely warm winter coat (secondhand of course), but I also bought these three books. They have been on my Amazon-wishlist for ages. They are second-hand but brand-new! And so cheap as well! I am so happy!

At the moment I am still knitting my scarves for the Gothic/Fantasy fair, but I can hardly wait to go back to felting and embroidery. Especially with so many great books to inspire me!
And I want to spend more time on webdesign, too. I want to learn more about CSS and do some online tutorials on Photoshop. Actually I have so many plans that I practically drown in them. I have to be more consistent in writing them down in my notebook, but every time I do this more ideas pop up out of the blue and this puts me off. On Flickr I was given the advice to order the book by Julia Cameron, The Artists' Way. At first I had the impression that it was meant for people who suffer from a creative block, but after some research it might be something for me too, to help me get some more structure in my creative production. So I ordered it today at the bookshop. It will arrive in about two weeks' time. I also joined the Artists' Way-group on Flickr. We are to start working with the book on the 1st of January 2006. I'm looking forward to this. And maybe my fellow Flickrers have some advice for me too. No doubt there must be more people who suffer from the same problem as me.

Oh, I and I still want to revise my novel and go and look for a publisher. And... present my Amazing Circles to a publisher to use for postcards (idea from my mother) and maybe posters, too.
But now back to basics and on to the supermarket and sort out the laundry.

Not really textile, of course, but I've become addicted to creating Magical Circles! I saw the MC's Joyce (Tsaiware) had created and she told me the secret behind them aka the technique to make them with Photoshop. This is so great to do that I made about 60 today.

I crocheted this scarf with mohair yarn from Turkey, which I ordered via e-Bay. This is lovely material to work with. This my third Squiggle and it took be about one hour and a half to crochet. It is great fun to crochet this pattern and I quite like the result when it is draped round your neck. It looks more like an extravagant collar than a scarf.

Last Sunday there was an enormous textiles market in Leiden, with so many stand it made me dizzy. There was actually too much to choose from, sothat I only bought a small piece of leather I need for embellishing a bag I am going to make and some cotton for a cushion. What a pity I cannot sew my own clothes!

You see that funny lopsided lampshade? That's what I produced for my felting class. I DON'T LIKE IT! So I called the thing, which makes me holler with laughter every time I look at it, NoNo. It's definitely a UFO and it will stay one. I'm not going to finish this. NEVER!

This is the start of a huge project: a cardi, involving freeform knitting, crochet, hand embroidery and loads of time, I guess. I will use mainly various shades of red yarn, with some accents in other colours.
In the mean time I'd also like to start on a bag using the magic ball method. For this I will use recycled sari yarn and lots of other multi-colour yarns. It will be really wild!

This is one of the silk/wool paper sheet I mentioned. I really lay awake the night it lay drying, for fear it would fall apart if I tried to pick it up. But it didn't and was even softer and more beautiful than I had imagined.

...in here. Why? Because it is impossible to sew damp fabric.

Hmm... O.K. This is what I've been up to: I tried (yes tried, because I didn't quite succeed) to felt small pieces of wool/silk paper I made earlier to a a piece of silk. For some reason not all the paper particles felted to the fabric, so I have to be artistic and add some nice (I hope) stitches to this thing. Which, in time, before Wendnesday I hope, when I have my felting class, will be turned by nimble my hands into a lampshade. I don't need a lampshade. I don't want a lampshade and yet I'm making one because of the challenge and my wanting to try out new techniques.
Well, the silk fabric is lying on the radiator, which now causes the room to heat to a tropical temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. Dry, little fabric, dry fast, sothat I can finish this, by now not too favourite, project. I wanna continue knitting my clapotis!!!

I'm sitting here waiting in this heat and that's why I'm writing on my blog, after having been silent for about one week. I've done so much textily, knitting things that it kept me from adding some pictures of what I have done.

Last Saturday I went to a national felters' meeting in Warnsveld. This week I knitted a skinny, I finished the scarf for my mother, I finished my feather and fan scarf, made two kinds of silk/wool paper sheets, took up knitting the clapotis again and began on a freeform cardi. A prolific week, no?

Textile festival Tilburg

Last Saturday I went to the Textiel Festival in Tilburg, which was organized by the Textile Museum.
It included a crafts market and a suppliers' market. The crafts market was very inspirational for me, as there were several felting artists showing their goodies.
I was lucky to be able to buy some angelina fibre, and, as usual, books on embroidery.
I also vistited the museum, of which I liked the textile lab best. In there people are experimenting with new material on knitting and embroidery machines. Wish I could work there! That would be total bliss every day!
There was a damast exhibition as well, with the most incredibly gorgeous fabrics!

I did not participate in any of the workshops, because I was too late to enroll. However, Neli, who is in my felting course did a workshop on screenprinting on fabrics. You see her at it in the photo on the right. She will surely tell me all the ins and outs.
All in all I had a great day and I came home exhausted but satisfied. And laden with bags with great contents... And I did quite a bit of knitting while on the train!

Here you see the fastening of the bag. I rolled up a small piece of inner tubing and added a small metal bead. In this pic you can also see that I used striped cotton for the lining.

Moped rubber is clearly tougher than inner bicycle tyre. It was hard to stitch this onto the felt, augh!

I finished my bag! It was quite some job and took longer than I expected. But it turned out quite like I planned, so I am pleased with the result.
The bag is felted out merino wool. The rubber is recycled inner bicycle and moped tubing. My fingers still ache from all the stitching I did. Unfortunately the material was too tough for my sewing machine.

For some reason I am suddenly unable to upload photos, grumpf! Well... I'll just try and describe what I have been working on for the past few days. I made some red felt pieces to turn into a bag. I took an inner moped tube and cut out a motif I found on a tattoo-site, twice, for the front and back of the bag. I have been cutting inner bicycle tubes for the sides of the bag. It is a hell of a job, but I like the result very much, so far.

I may sound a bit curt, but this because I am frustrated by not being able to opload my pictures. I've tried just about everything and it does not work. Maybe uploading from Flickr will do the trick and I'll add my pictures later.

So called scarf

I was so inspired after I saw some of the pictures from people knitting this scarf that I rushed out to the woolshop and bought five balls of Gedifra Stripe. Funnily the colours in the wool change right at the end of the rows, which I'm not too happy with. Well, I'll see what happens when I start knitting from the next ball. I very much like this herringbone stitch, though. It's quite fun to knit something that looks like it's woven. The pattern is to be found here
and I was inspired by hello pretty city's scarf, which I like better than mine because of the yarn she used. Apparently slightly irregular wool is better for this stitch. Hm...
I'd like a cardi with this stitch too.

And to celebrate my ending this chore I went into town to look for inner tubes, or whatever they are called. Tonight is the first evening of my third felting course, which I'm looking forward to very much. Our teacher Jolande had a great idea: we'll be combining recycled material with felt. Tonight we'll be using rubber. So that's why I went looking for tubes. And I got some at several bicycle shops. In return I will have to show the guys the finished product. A bag, I suppose...

Curtain job

My hands are itching to do some felting. Or rather machine embroidery, because I found this great book at the library with lots of examples I want to try. But... I have an immense load of curtains lying on my table. They belong to Natasja and I promised I would make them 14.5 cm longer, which involves a lot of cutting lengthy pieces of fabric and measuring and stitching. It turns out to be a hell of a job. So that's my priority, at the moment. I just have do sit down and get it over with...

I leave it to you to guess what this is, but I must admit I felt somewhat like a gynaecologist when I was sculpting the wet felt. It is 22 cm long, by the way.
It is not finished, due to my cat who chose to lie on it for the whole night. What I must do now, is wet it thoroughly and sculpt it again into the right shape. And prevent my cat from lying on it again...

So yesterday I felted her a shoulder bag, yet smaller than mine, as she is only nine years old. She chose the colours herself. The bag is still a bit damp and I still need to felt the shoulder strap. When it is really finished I'll make another photo to show the result.

This is the Dream bag I felted some time ago, after I had seen just such a bag in my dreams at night. It turned out just as I wanted it to be, only I made it a bit bigger than in my dreams, sothat I could put lots of things in it. It has a lining and with a zipper and a separate pocket, also with a zipper.

And this is my still unfinished clappy. Not much to say about this, apart from the fact that I´m not using stitch markers but knit a purl stitch on the right side and knit the stitch that will be dropped on the wrong side.

Yippy, I can upload photos! So here one more...
This is the ruffles scarf I crocheted during my vacation. Of course. it is only meant as decoration (of my neck, not only the mannequin you see in the picture). It will no be able to keep me warm in winter.
As I´m still not able to upload more than one pic in one entry, I´ll put the other pic in a separate entry, pfff...

This I time I´ll try my best and upload a photograph.
It looks like it´s going to work this time. I found out what I did wrong, ha!
This is the scarf I´m working on. At this moment it is much, much longer than in the pic. It is made from leftovers from my previous knitting period, about twenty years ago. It´s easy to to do and my first attempt at someting else than just plain knitting and purling. I won´t stop until it is veeeery long, or when I run out of wool...

I just started a weblog and still can't believe it! I've wanted this for ages, but refrained from actually starting one because I'm busy as hell already. I already feel the pressure looming ahead. O.K. Here it suddenly is, my very own Weblog. God knows why I suddenly went ahead and filled out all these lines...
I promise myself faithfully not take this too seriously and see it as an exercise in becoming a sluggish blogger. (I know I won't succeed, though...)
It is my intention to write here about my crafty pursuits, as quite a few people ask me to do so. And I must admit I quite like the idea of jotting down what keeps my hands busy )or not, when I´m to busy to do any felting, knitting etc.) and what plans I have got for future projects.

Last Friday I came home from a relaxing vacation in Denmark. I spent quite a lot of time happily knitting on a bluebluegreen scarf. I also started a clapotis (yes, me too...) Right now the still unfinished clap is sitting with its balls of cotton in its plastic bag, hoping I will soon have some time to finish it. I hope this will not turn into my first UFO, but I doubt it.
And I started and finished a ruffles scarf (in crochet, because I did not want to knit an endless row of 720 stitches, which would not fit on my needles anyway.
So far I tried to upload three images, but this went totally wrong. Possibly due to Blogger getting down for maintenace. However, I might have done something wrong. I'm a newbie, so think I'll be excused. If not, what the heck! I´ll give it a retry very soon.
